16. Get Together Talk: Pecha Kucha & Death Doula
The group revisited a discussion about the community and the difficulty in having a precise understanding of everyone in it. The proposal then was to gain a deeper understanding of each other’s strengths, current projects, and artistic goals.
Structured Introductions
To achieve deeper connections, several formats for self-introduction were proposed:
-
Elevator Pitches: A simple format of a one-minute pitch from each person, followed by a Q&A session to dive deeper into specific projects or ideas.
-
Pecha Kucha: In this format, each presenter presents a series of slides, with only 20 seconds allocated for each slide. This fast-paced format would allow members to share their backgrounds, motivations, current work, and even struggles, which could then lead to a group Q&A session.
Purpose of the Community
Members expressed a desire for:
-
Community: To counteract the stereotype of the isolated, “lonely artist” and build a supportive network.
-
Tangible Outcomes: To gain more than just social connection, including learning practical skills. It was suggested that practicing project pitches in a standardized, “industry-accepted” format could be an educational experience in itself, regardless of whether a collaboration results from it.
-
Opportunity Radar: To become familiar enough with each other’s work to share relevant external opportunities (calls for art, grants, residencies), thereby strengthening everyone’s network.
Call for Art (Grief and Dying):
Christine O’Donnell, who has trained to be a death doula, has announced that they are curating a show about art and grief. She invited members to submit work (including paintings, 3D pieces, and video art) or recommend artists who explore this theme. The exhibition is planned to be an experimental curation, potentially held in a funeral home.
