17. Get Together Talk: Case study of ShowUp Boston, a Pecha Kucha presentation
In this Pecha Kucha presentation and subsequent roundtable discussion, Christine O’Donnell introduces ShowUp, a Boston-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering underrepresented artists through exhibitions, education, and community engagement.
On the Nonprofit Funding Paradox
“Everything that we do that makes us good, makes people not want to donate to us. Because we look good. We look like we don’t need money. If you look too good… people think we don’t beg.” — Christine O’Donnell
On Collaboration & Strategy
“Don’t constantly reinvent the wheel… You have to think, ‘Why is nobody doing what I want to do?’ And a lot of times you’re going to figure out nobody’s doing what I want to do because it can’t be done… It can be so much easier to set up a branch of [an existing] nonprofit… taking an operation that already exists and just working underneath them.” — Christine O’Donnell
On the Reality of Institutional Barriers
“To enter the system, it’s already going to cost you half of your life… It’s not like a casual, ‘Oh, I’d like to do that.’ … If you want to contact the prison guards to say, ‘I want to offer our program,’ then you need to be a 501(c)(3)… have a name, have a community supporting you, fundraising. Everything is already going to cost half of your life. Then to make the impact is going to cost you another half.” — Mo
